Golden sits at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, twelve miles from downtown Denver. Downtown is Washington Avenue, and Clear Creek runs along its north edge with 10th Street beside it. Everything below is on foot between the two; the trails are a separate day, chosen with the mesa-or-canyon guide.
Park once. The City’s parking site lists the North Garage at 702 12th Street, the South Garage at 1250 Jackson Street and the Clear Creek Lot at 304 10th Street. Between 7 am and 5 pm the first two hours are free and each hour after that $2.50, to a maximum of $10 a day, paid by licence plate; on-street parking is free for up to two hours before 5 pm and free after 5 pm, with the days it applies on the signs.
01 · A meal on Washington Avenue
Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse, at the corner of 12th Street and Washington Avenue, smokes its own meats and is open seven days, from 11 am on weekdays and 10:30 am at weekends; walk-ins are welcome, the patios take dogs, and card payments carry a 3% surcharge. For the morning, Humble House Cafe at 1208 Washington pours coffee daily 7 am–4 pm, with the kitchen open to 2 pm. Woody’s at 1305 has made wood-fired pizza here for more than 30 years, daily 11 am–11 pm.
Getting there: the North Garage is on 12th Street, by the avenue. Best for: the meal, and the storefronts either side of it.
02 · The history museum and the park on the creek
The Golden History Museum at 923 10th Street is the City’s, free, and open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am–4:30 pm, closed Sunday and Monday and on the main holidays. Its exhibits draw on a collection of more than 15,000 objects, with a hands-on gallery for families with young children. Along the creek at 11th and Arapahoe, Golden History Park is free and open daily 5 am–11 pm: cabins, a barn and a chicken coop moved log by log from the Pearce Ranch in Golden Gate Canyon, the 1876 Guy Hill schoolhouse and a Native American Arbor built in 2024. The buildings open on event days.
Getting there: down to 10th Street from the avenue. Best for: an hour indoors, then the cabins by the water.
03 · The creek: Parfet, the whitewater course and Lions Park
Parfet Park at 725 10th Street dates from the early 1900s and is the oldest park in Golden, with shade trees, picnic tables, restrooms and a large field on the Clear Creek Trail. Upstream, the Clear Creek Whitewater Park runs about seven blocks along the north bank across from Lions Park, 1300 10th Street, which has a large playground with accessible features, picnic tables and restrooms. The course is free and unsupervised, for paddlers the City says must be proficient in fast, cold water. The creek-corridor parks close an hour after dusk, and alcohol, glass and smoking are banned there; dogs stay on a leash.
Getting there: along the creek path from the history park. Best for: watching the kayakers, a picnic, the playground.
04 · Two free museums
Foothills Art Center at 1133 Arapahoe Street has shown art since 1968, free, Monday to Saturday 10 am–5 pm and Sunday noon–5 pm. On the Colorado School of Mines campus south-west of downtown, the Mines Museum of Earth Science at 1310 Maple Street is free and open daily 10 am–4 pm: Colorado minerals, one of the state’s two Apollo 17 moon rocks and more than 3,000 items on display, with a family scavenger hunt that earns a free rock.
Getting there: Arapahoe Street is the street the history park sits on; the campus is a longer walk. Best for: the moon rock, and galleries that cost nothing.
05 · A taproom
Mountain Toad Brewing at 900 Washington Avenue brews everything gluten-reduced, aims to have a food truck every day and runs trivia and live music: Monday to Thursday noon–10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am–10 pm, Sunday 11 am–9 pm. Coors, which the history museum’s own page puts within walking distance of the museum, has no listing on this guide yet. By car, Cannonball Creek on the north side of town and New Terrain on Table Mountain Parkway both have food trucks and a patio or beer garden.
Getting there: back along Washington Avenue. Best for: the end of the afternoon.
For families, swap the creek parks for the Colorado Railroad Museum at 17155 W 44th Avenue, a drive: more than 100 locomotives, cars and cabooses on 15 acres, Tuesday to Sunday 9 am–5 pm, closed Monday, $12 for adults and $5 for ages 2 to 17. For a hiking day, choose North Table Mountain or the canyon trail in the morning and come to the avenue afterwards.

Getting here
Drive times are estimates for normal conditions and vary with traffic, weather and construction; check a live routing service before you set out. Golden is about 25 minutes from Denver. Without a car, the City’s Ride page lists RTD’s W Line from Denver Union Station to the Jefferson County Government Center every half hour, RTD bus 17 between 10th and Washington and Federal Center Station daily, and Golden FlexRide Monday to Saturday; the City’s Ore Cart shuttle is free, runs three routes Monday to Saturday with a stop at the light rail station, and does not run on federal holidays. Bustang does not stop in Golden. Posted signs override anything written here.
Accessibility: what we can confirm
The City says the Ore Cart shuttle is ADA accessible and that Lions Park’s playground has accessible features, and Jefferson County says the paved Clear Creek Trail, which runs through the creek parks and on into the canyon, is 10 feet wide and ADA accessible. The museums, the art center and the restaurants have published nothing about step-free entrances or accessible restrooms, and the parking site says nothing about accessible spaces in the garages, so none of that is claimed here. Contact a business directly before relying on it. Corrections and additions to this section are welcome and published with their date.
