Gold Mine Cupcakes began in 2013 in founder Sara Rutter’s mother’s kitchen and moved to downtown Golden in 2015. Dan and Jen Thoemke bought the shop in 2021 and kept the recipes; Sara’s sister Krista stayed on as general manager.
The everyday flavors are red velvet, almond, birthday cake, double chocolate, vanilla raspberry, turtle, carrot cake and cookies and cream, with two or three seasonal flavors, one gluten-free and one vegan cupcake each day. The shop takes special-event orders by phone, hosts private cupcake-decorating parties, and delivers within Golden city limits with 48 hours’ notice and a one-dozen minimum. It closes early on days it sells out.
